Frida's Stamp

For designers, stamp design is by far one of the most prestigious and memorable projects to be granted. Generally speaking, most US stamps depict America or American-related subjects. American flags, the liberty bell, native birds and flowers, the statue of liberty..these are generally the images we see on stamps. On June 21, 2001, Frida Kahlo became the first Hispanic woman to be honored on an American postage stamp. The President of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, Cecilia Alvear, responded, "as Latinos we are pleased by the U.S. Postal Service's recognition of the artistic genius of Frida Kahlo..This stamp, honoring a Mexican artist who has transcended 'la frontera' and has become an icon to Hispanics, feminists and art lovers, will be a further reminder of the continuous cultural contributions of Latinos to the United States."

  1. I'm familiar with Frida as I've seen her work and film biography starring Salma Hayek. She is undoubtedly a unique talented. Think about how far we have come when we have a LATINO WOMAN ARTIST on a U.S. Stamp. Keep in my that being on a stamp is one of the greatest honors the country can bestowe on a person. I think that this only proves that America has made such headway in racial and cultural acceptance.

  2. I do believe that america has made great strides as far as acceptance and racial diversity. However, I didnt know that it was such an honor to be on a US stamp. Am I the only person who didnt know this? I think its great that we are featuring a female latino artist though, especially if it is such a high honor.

  3. Thank you for posting this Lauren! I'm an art major and am very familiar with Frida Kahlo's work. It really is interesting what you mentioned, which I have never thought of, that US stamps usually depict something very patriotic. It really is a big deal that they recognized Kahlo on a stamp.

  4. The only art I really know about is literature, so it's cool to see this. It's also really cool that this Mexican artist has gotten to be honored in this way, especially since the US is always a big fan of the rich white man. It makes sense that this is a great honor for an artist, because stamps see their way into every American home.
